The Bender Gallery is opening the exhibition Vitric Compositions: Assemblages in Glass on Friday October 5, 2012. The exhibition will explore the work of three internationally collected glass artists who construct glass sculptures by assembling individual pieces of glass by fusing or laminating. The Bender Gallery is the only gallery in the North Carolina dedicated exclusively to studio art glass and houses the region's largest glass art collection. The exhibition will be open during regular gallery hours through December 28. Vitric Compositions will showcase the work of Martin Kremer, Toland Peter Sand, and William Zweifel and their individual approaches to the assemblage of glass componentry in creating sculpture.
Martin, Toland and William's sculptures embody items used in daily life. Toland Sand incorporates alphabets and symbols that could be used in language or in complex mathematical equations into even more complex geometric sculptures. Martin Kremer creates edifices and what could be mundane items, such as a bowl or ladder, out of tiny individual components. Both Toland's and Martin's work is exceptionally precise and technical. William Zweifel's assemblages are more fluid and organic in nature. William weaves individual strips of glass into what could be a comforting blanket or a remnant of clothing. The simple piece of fabric is rendered more symbolic by being draped over a chunk of granite, a steel sculpture or a block of crystal formed to reference a wall or frame of some kind. Viewing these artists' work causes one to ponder the creativity, energy, and focus it must take to create such dramatic sculptures.
The Bender Gallery is located at 12 S Lexington Avenue in Asheville, North Carolina next door to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge. There is a garage on nearby Biltmore Avenue as well as street parking. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 am - 5 pm and Sunday from 12 pm - 5 pm.
